As a jeweller, being able to accurately resize a ring is a valuable skill that will bring customers back time and time again. If you are a small, independent or amateur jeweller, being able to resize has an added bonus, as you can created one average-sized ring, which you can then resize accordingly. This means that you can keep your stock fairly low, but still be able to cater for potential customers.

At Durston Tools, we have a selection of ring stretchers and reducers in available. The method that you use will depend on the type of ring that you want to resize, whether you are stretching or reducing the ring, and the ring resizer that you have. However, there are a few key things that you need to remember: here are our top tips.

1.

Measure & Mark

Before you start, check the size, and check again!  Mark a triblet so that you know exactly what size you want your ring to be.

2.

The Right Tools

Make sure that you are using the right tool for the job. It is much easier to resize a plain band than rings with stones. If you use the wrong tool for rings with stones, you risk damaging both the band and the stones; check out Durston Tools’ selection ring resizers to find the right one for the job.

3.

Annealing

Always anneal the ring before stretching. In fact, anneal all metal before you try to manipulate it. This will make the job much easier to do, and will reduce the risk of you snapping the ring.

4.

Don’t Overstretch

Don’t overstretch the ring. The amount you can stretch a ring depends on the thickness of the band. If the band is chunky, it can withstand more stretching (but make sure that the customer knows that the band will no longer be as chunky when you have finished with it!). More delicate rings have less metal to play with, so will not stretch as far. A general rule is stretch a ring no more than two sizes, but this is not precise; you need to rely on common sense and experience. If you are not sure, work cautiously; go slowly, gradually stretching the ring and stopping when you think you may have reached its limits.
